Visitors Guide – do’s and don’ts

Do's

What we encourage you to

  • Safety first
    • listen to the directions of farm staff
    • read and follow farm signage
  • Learn
    • notice patterns and processes of the wild
    • be curious about why we do what we do
    • ask questions
  • Experience
    • Tour several ecosystems with a walk (or run) on our 1.5 mile perimeter trail.
  • Imagine
    • What if every tree, leaf, stone, bone and bug in the wild places had a thousand secrets waiting to be discovered? Even a rotting log could be a universe to explore, a vast library written in a language we have yet to learn. With curiosity and careful observation, a rotting log could show you something that no one else knows. Most of nature is still a mystery, and science is never done.
  • Share
    • We love kids! Parents can read and learn about our aesthetic and then be sure their children understand and follow along. Lack of clarity and/or firm guidance could undo our work and put kids at risk.

Don'ts

What we prohibit

  • unsafe behavior
    • do not climb on machines or equipment
    • do not enter the warehouse area, where there are stacks of massive logs and rusty scrap metal
  • degradation of the wilds
    • do not push over dead trees, whether they are upright or leaning on another tree. Standing dead trees are called snags and are important to a healthy ecosystem.  Be aware when snags are nearby, especially on a windy day - a falling tree can be fatal.
    • do not break off dead branches, they belong on the trees until they fall away naturally
    • do not forage (harvest) mushrooms, edible / medicinal plants or pick wild flowers. We have so many visitors that foraging would rapidly deplete the forests. Leave the life alone.
    • do not dig for any reason
  • risk of fire
    • do not strike matches, safety or book, anywhere on the farm. Fireworks and flammables are not appropriate either.
  • concealed carry
    • you must disclose firearms and knives to the staff if you desire to carry, otherwise keep these in your car. we may ask you to refrain from carrying at our discretion.
  • uninvited pets
    • at first, keep dogs in your vehicle. if your dog is gentle and calm, you may ask the staff if he/she can be let out. Dogs that bark incessantly, chase wild animals, have any history of aggression toward people or other animals, or are not well behaved must stay in your vehicle, no exceptions. We reserve the right to refuse dogs at any time.
  • invasion of privacy
    • do not take any pictures or videos of any people without their express permission
    • do not take pictures of farm equipment or buildings without the written permission of staff
  • substance abuse and addiction
    • never bring illegal substances or illegal amounts of substances outlawed both federally and in Michigan to Love Farm
    • do not illegally possess or use prescription medicine

What not to take out of your vehicle

  • emf generators
    • cell phones, beepers, pagers, electronic games, tablets, or virtual / augmented reality devices produce harmful radiation, are a distraction and impinge on the wilderness experience of other visitors
  • future landfill
    • Love Farm generates very little garbage and we have no public trash cans. Disposables like paper plates, plastic forks, napkins, etc. squander shared resources both in the making and throwing away. Supposed compostable tableware requires industrial composting methods and cannot be broken down on Love Farm.
    • Food or candy in wrappers or take out containers, drinks in consumer cans or plastic/glass bottles are also not compatible with Love Farm.
  • industrial and plastic toys
    • With forests to explore and fields to run in, Love Farm is way more entertaining and enriching than mass produced toys, especially plastic toys with small parts like legos that can get left behind in the grass or soil
    • we do not allow manufactured ink or paint, bubbles, or clay on the farm, even non-toxic or "child safe" products.
  • other
    • fasteners - nails, screws
  • destructive emotions
    • pessimism about the fate of humanity or the planet earth

What we appreciate you refraining from

  • smoking or drinking alcoholic beverages especially in view of others, which includes neighboring houses
  • playing portable speakers

conflict resolution

  • Love Farm is on private land. Align your and your family's behavior with our approach and culture to the best of your ability. Our staff will clearly communicate any problems we observe, and seek understanding. If problems cannot be smoothly and rapidly resolved, you will be asked to leave. Problems include verbal abuse, threats, endangerment to self or others, ignoring staff instructions or posted signage, disregarding our prohibitions, or for any reason that the staff chooses.
