Melonie Steffes

Melonie More Than You Can Ever Know 2mb
Within all the beauty and terror of the natural world, I find bridges between the “real world” and my strange internal landscapes. I carry on the ancient human tradition of telling stories to explain what is simultaneously bigger than us and within us and through that process making intuitive agreements that keep a sort of peace. Humans spend a lot of time dividing, categorizing and labeling everything we see, deciding what sets us apart from all else. I am very interested in preserving the wilderness of the mind. When I create, separation breaks down, becomes unclear once more, merging with primal voices that I may not consciously understand. Silence and solitude are extremely important components of my process, especially now in an age of endless distraction and noise. I want my work to encourage others to feel deeply, connect to their source and let their minds roam free.

More Than You Could Ever Know

Jil Johnson

Jil Johnson escaped from a prison ship bound for a penal colony in the greater Magellanic Cloud. Her crimes were rumored to be primarily political, although she herself has hinted at unnatural relations with sentient dentrifice appliances. Nothing of course can be confirmed as any alleged transgressions happened long ago and very, very far away. Here on Earth, in Traverse City specifically, she lives a quiet nondescript life, content to stay under the radar by striding defiantly through town with her 400 lb pig friend, Violet. She lives with her suave baby daddy Ron and their dapper son, Gus, the apple of her eye. Jil hardly ever visits her friends, and in fact may not even show up to this art show. She loathes all forms of art, but especially the kind that she makes. Regardless, her fierce talent cannot be denied, and she is compelled to incessantly create works of nightmarish brilliance. She has often woken up in her studio to find a completed kooky masterpiece, as if elves had come in the night.

Dan Kelly

Dan Kelly seems to be permanently at odds with convention, as if he were a sort of cultural splinter that is intended only to irritate and eventually be plucked out. Although he can manifest excellence like nobody's business, he has learned to keep his own counsel and share his incandescence only with those other oddballs who are also biding their time in the shadow of the leviathan. How many shrew dreams did it take to call down the comet that turned all the t-rexs into chickens?
